Breaking Bad is back this weekend (Woot!) and in honor of everyone's favorite anti-hero, Walter White, here is a DIY that pays homage to the man's transformation from protagonist to antagonist, from family man to bona fide bad-ass. I'm not sure whether to loath him or feel sorry for him but one thing is true we will all remember his name.
Although the characters in the show may be flirting with disaster, this project is lacking in danger and it's totally legal (meth-not even once!).
Breaking Bad begins with Walter White using his extensive knowledge of chemistry to create a high grade methamphetamine (blue crystal-meth) in order to secure his families finances in troubled times.
Using a piece of wood that I picked up off the side of the road (score!), some supplies from the plumbing isle, and the pet store, I came up with this simple display for flowers or cuttings.
First, using wood screws (that were too long) I screwed my plates to the plank. These plates have a threaded 3/8" center hole. Picked em up in the plumbing isle for a couple bucks a piece (Yeah! B*%&$!)
Here's where I got clever. I didn't want to purchase a whole length of threaded rod when I only wanted about 5 or 6 inches. My solution was to purchase two bolts of varying sizes and have the guys at the key counter saw the heads off. Ooh, that does sound gory and awful! I wish I had thought to put the heads on the back of a turtle and set it loose in the desert. Next time!
The longer bolts allowed the final bracket to stand out and away from the board so the beakers would have plenty of room to hang.
The test tubes were held in place with some inexpensive pipe brackets.
In order to hang the entire piece, I placed some screws on the back side and used wire to create a hanger. Notice the screws poking through the back. Meh, sometimes you make due with what you have.
The wire that I had available was coated and would not tie or wrap around itself so I used crimping tubes to create a loop.
Threading the wire through the tube and then back again created a loop that I could wrap around my screws. Using a pair of pliers, I crimped the tube so the wire would not slip.
I carefully placed my test tubes and beakers into their respective holsters and added some blue crystals that I picked up at the pet store. I'm rooting some philodendron cuttings in the beakers and using the test tubes as bud vasses. Just like the show, this project is a combination of the beautiful and the weird. I hope you enjoy the final season of Breaking Bad and if you haven't seen this show, check it out. It's rated one of the best TV shows of all time.
Am I pleased with how it turned out? Does Walt Jr. like breakfast?
