DIY Dip Dyed Wood Shelf

DIY Dip Dyed Wood Shelf

While experimenting with some left-over tie dye pigments, it was discovered that untreated wood soaks up dye like a sponge. I used a vibrant fuchsia and dunked the wood blocks directly into the dye to soak.

The dye slowly creeps up the wood as it soaks into the wood fibers. After aproximately half of the wood was saturated with the dye I removed the wood blocks and left them to dry.

I decided to use the blocks to make a box with dip-dyed corners.

Using wood glue and some clamps, I glued two of the pieces together and left them to dry overnight. The next day, I glued and clamped the joined pieces together to form a box.

Once the completed piece was dry, I attached a picture hanger to the back and hung it on the wall as a display shelf perfect for a small vignette.

I love the pop of color on an otherwise natural material.
